The Farm

DSC_0348.jpg One of our missions at the Centre is to model sustainable living.  The farm is more than a great place to buy produce; we are an experiment in sustainability, learning as we go and teaching what we can.  Permaculture and biodynamic farming are a couple of the philosophies and methods we incorporate – essentially trying to find the ways that are the most nurturing and healing for the Earth.  We host programs here for those who want to learn more about growing their own food in a healthy and less energy consuming way.  Our volunteers contribute enormously to the farm and have a good time too—if you’re interested in helping out please give us a call or an email or drop by.

We are a small market farm.  People in the surrounding community of East Sooke have been very enthusiastic about having another farm in the area to provide fresh, healthy produce.  There’s a new awareness growing about the need for local food producers given the way fossil fuels are running out and how they contaminate our home planet.  Not wanting to contribute to pollution or the increase in diseases associated with the use of pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers, we grow our produce using organic guidelines. Plus, of course when you eat food that is really fresh you get more flavour as well as more vitamins and minerals.

Happy Spring! We expect a sizeable increase in the amount of produce we’ll have for sale this season so come by the Centre and check out the table – we’ll be opening in April.  At some point this year we hope to be building a produce stand – not too fancy but big enough to hold lots of bags of lettuce (reported by some customers as the best they’ve ever had) and more of everything.
The new field over by the pond will be planted with potatoes.  Deer don’t eat potatoes (hopefully) and we may begin a campaign this year to raise money for a fence so we can grow other crops as well.

Volunteer Retreat 2007

Share the Centre for Earth and Spirit Experience
Dates for 2008 pending

Come and share the daily life of the Centre for Earth and Spirit for a minimum of 7 days or as many weeks as you like during the above dates. There will be time for meditation and reflection, preparing and sharing meals, choices of projects to participate in, expressions of creativity, perusing the library, hiking, swimming (more likely in June) and simply communing with nature.  Our days here are varied—there are garden and landscaping opportunities like working on the labyrinth or planting vegetables and flowers; helping build a shelter for the firewood or put up berry netting.  We may take some field trips into local parks and beaches.  You are free to make your time here into a retreat or a more social experience.  The Centre work will be about 4 hours per day every five out seven days.

$30 per day includes meals and lodging (may be shared).
